What to Expect During Your First Tutoring Assessment

Personalized Tutoring | July 14, 2026

If you’ve been worrying about your child’s confidence at school, deciding to reach out for support is a big step, and an important one. At Northern Lights Learning Center, we know that the word “assessment” can feel a little daunting, both for parents and children. That is why we have outlined exactly what to expect during your first tutoring assessment so you can arrive feeling informed and reassured rather than anxious.

Why We Start With an Assessment

Jumping straight into lessons without understanding where your child is would be like giving directions without knowing the starting point. Our assessment uses both formal and informal methods to identify the exact concepts and strands your child is missing. Teaching time gets spent on what actually matters for your child, not on a generic program designed for the average student.

What the Assessment Actually Looks Like

This is not a high-stakes test. Think of it as a guided conversation paired with some purposeful activities.

During the session, your child might:

  • Read a passage aloud while we observe the strategies they use naturally
  • Work through math problems at varying levels to find where understanding becomes uncertainty
  • Answer questions verbally or complete a short writing task
  • Engage in activities that reveal how they approach challenges, not just whether they get the right answer

That last point matters. A child who shuts down when something feels hard is telling us something valuable about their confidence, and that shapes how we build their program from day one.

How to Prepare Your Child

A little preparation goes a long way toward helping your child show up as themselves.

Practical things that help: a good night’s sleep, a snack beforehand, and any recent report cards or school work you can bring along. It also helps to frame the visit in a low-key, positive way, something like, “We’re meeting a teacher who helps kids with exactly the things you find tricky.” What to steer clear of is framing it as a test they could fail or building it into a stressful event.

The goal is for your child to walk in feeling safe, not evaluated.

What Happens After

Once we have a clear picture of your child’s strengths and the specific gaps in their learning, we build an individualised educational program designed around how they learn best. You’ll come away with a clear starting point for your child, a sense of which concepts we’ll address first, and a realistic picture of the path forward. Progress isn’t measured in grades alone. The real goal is helping your child feel capable and genuinely inspired to learn again.
